When Skies Turn Orange: Drones Enhance Wildfires Response In Canada and Beyond

Wildfire smoke blanketed Toronto, Chicago and New York this summer, a grim reminder that fires have no international borders. Canada has logged more than 6 million acres burned so far in 2026, which puts the country on pace for one of its worst seasons on record. At the same time, the United States has already surpassed 3 million acres burned, well above its ten year average. Europe experienced its own wildfire crisis. As flames continue to outpace traditional response capacity, drone technology has become a necessity in emergency management.

The scale of this year’s fire activity shows why aerial intelligence matters more than ever. Canada reported hundreds of active fires in mid-July. British Columbia, Alberta and the Northwest Territories faced the highest risk levels. Smoke from northwestern Ontario forced dramatic evacuations. 

South of the border, the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) placed the U.S. at its highest risk tier. Dozens of large uncontained fires burning nationwide as of late July. Colorado and Utah, both close to home for many in the unmanned systems industry, have each logged well over 100,000 acres burned this year.

Europe also faced one of its most destructive wildfire seasons in decades. EU nations have burned roughly 485,000 hectares since January, well above the pace of even 2025, which had previously been the worst year on record. Spain’s Ávila fire has become the largest in the country’s history. The nation has burned over 200,000 hectares this year, nearly five times its historical average by this point in the season. France and Spain together have evacuated more than 325,000 people since early July. Greece also battled fast moving blazes near Athens and on the island of Crete. With drought and prolonged heat waves disrupting the region through the summer, European officials warned that extreme fire danger could persist well into August, mirroring the same conditions driving the crisis in North America. 

Ground crews and manned aircraft remain essential, but they cannot always reach fire lines fast enough or safely enough. Smoke columns, shifting winds and rugged terrain routinely ground helicopters and put firefighters at risk. This gap has pushed emergency managers to look upward, toward remotely piloted systems that can fly into conditions too dangerous for crewed aircraft. Volatus Aerospace positioned its emergency and disaster response services around exactly this gap, recently partnerings with both Singular Aircraft and Kraus Hamdani Aerospace to advance a sovereign Canadian capability supporting wildfire response, emergency management, public safety and other government applications. 

Drones Fill Critical Gaps in Disaster Response

Volatus offers thermal and visual monitoring for hotspot identification, fire spread assessment and operational coordination during active incidents, using both remotely piloted and crewed platforms. Beyond fire detection, these tools support flood assessment, search and rescue operations and hazardous area reconnaissance to help keep personnel out of harm’s way while commanders gain a clearer operational picture. The company’s centralized Operations Control Centre ties these capabilities together to give incident commanders real time video feeds, telemetry and geospatial data so they can make faster decisions during fast moving events. 

That combination of speed and safety explains why drones have become indispensable in modern incident command. A single uncrewed aircraft can survey a fire perimeter in minutes, feed live thermal imagery to commanders on the ground and repeat the flight as conditions change, without exposing a pilot to smoke inhalation or falling debris.

Training Gap Threatens Wider Adoption

Glen Lynch, Chief Executive Officer of Volatus Aerospace, has argued that recurring natural disasters expose a structural problem rather than a seasonal one, one that demands a permanent, technology driven upgrade to emergency response systems rather than temporary surges of resources. At the same time, he and his company realized that technology alone will not solve the crisis. Emergency agencies need trained operators who understand both the aircraft and the complex and chaotic environment of a disaster zone. Volatus has started addressing these bottlenecks by building strategic partnerships such as the one they established with the University of Technology, Jamaica, announced in March 2026, with program delivery that began in April.

The initial cohort resulted in a structured learning pathway that started with an online foundational course and progressed to hands-on practical training at UTech’s Kingston campus. It covered mission planning, aerial assessment and operational deployment in real world scenarios. Learners who completed the pre-requisite course (which was available to emergency response globally, and is now an online self-paced course available through Volatus Academy) then advanced into the applied training that included search and rescue support, damage assessment and operations in complex mission environments. Lynch called the partnership another step in Volatus Aerospace’s strategy to build global capability through education, applied training and operational expertise.

Volatus has already trained more than 100,000 individuals worldwide. This first cohort provided a strong foundation to build on as the company continues expanding programs to support drone adoption in disaster management across government, industry and institutional sectors. The partnership also reinforces the company’s presence in the Caribbean, a region increasingly exposed to hurricanes, flooding and other climate-driven disasters that demand skilled aerial operators.

Online Course Brings Training to Anyone

The curriculum Volatus developed for the UTech Jamaica partnership proved popular enough that Volatus Academy turned it into a standalone, self-paced offering. Volatus Academy serves as a dedicated platform for drone and remote sensing education, providing high quality online and instructor-led courses designed for every experience level, from beginners to industry professionals. The Drone Technology in Disaster Recovery course, built on that same foundation, gives emergency managers, first responders and aspiring drone operators anywhere in the world access to structured disaster response training without needing to travel.

The self-paced format removes a major barrier for agencies with limited budgets or staff who cannot leave their posts for extended in-person instruction. A volunteer fire department in rural Colorado or a municipal emergency office in the Caribbean can now enroll operators without pulling them away from daily duties for weeks at a time. As wildfire and hurricane seasons grow more unpredictable, this kind of accessible, scalable training could determine which communities are ready when disaster strikes and which are left scrambling.

What Comes Next for Emergency Aviation

The current wildfire crisis will not be the last of its kind. Forecasters expect fire danger to keep rising through August across much of the western United States and Canada as above average temperatures persist. Every season that passes without adequate aerial intelligence and trained personnel increases the risk to both property and human life.

Drones will not replace firefighters, helicopters or ground crews. But they change what those teams can see and how quickly they can act. Real time thermal imagery lets commanders spot new hotspots before they grow into runaway fires. Rapid mapping after a flood shows which roads remain passable and which neighborhoods need immediate evacuation. Search and rescue teams gain eyes over terrain that would otherwise take hours to cover on foot.

Building durable disaster response capacity means investing in aerial technology today and training the workforce that will operate it tomorrow. Seeing through the smoke that has already drifted across two countries this summer, the case for that investment has rarely been more clear.
