A Ruthless War Lab
Ukraine, in Service’s view, is the world’s most ruthless laboratory for drone warfare, with technology iterating on a six‑week cycle. Iranian‑origin Shahed drones, also known as Geran, have accelerated from roughly 200 kilometers per hour two years ago to 700 kilometers per hour today, outrunning interceptors and forcing defenders to expend scarce surface‑to‑air and anti‑aircraft missiles. “When you’ve got 200 of these things coming in overnight,” he noted, “you don’t necessarily have 200 missiles,” so every defensive layer is stressed toward failure.

Meanwhile, traditional RF‑emitting drones have migrated to fiber‑optic‑tethered systems with virtually no radio signature. Early reels ran roughly one kilometer, then two to five, then ten; now Ukrainian operators routinely field tether lengths of 30 to 50 kilometers. Those tethers allow multiple drones, six to ten from one ground station, each carrying different munitions and running smart autonomous last‑mile strike profiles using YOLO, “you only look once,” object detection algorithms. The Gamification Of War
The most unsettling evolution is not only about speed, tethers or constant tech iterations, but psychology. “Warfare has been gamified,” Service said flatly. Operators fly through goggles in immersive FPV, much like Call of Duty players, except that the kills now involve real human beings.
Both sides in the Ukraine conflict have codified a points‑based scoring system for drone strikes, turning killing and capture into a league table that pilots play to win. A soldier is worth six points. If a soldier surrenders, they are worth sixty points. You get forty points for a tank. You get sixty points for a Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS). You get bonus points, maybe 2,000 or 3,000, for a helicopter or other high‑value assets on the battlefield, as long as every strike is recorded for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR). “Points make prizes,” he explained.
FPV pilots submit ISR footage to a central function inside their command and receive a catalog, “a bit like going through Amazon,” where they choose equipment based on accumulated points. For example, 50 points can buy a Vampire, a large quadcopter that carries four 80‑millimeter mortars and is delivered to the unit within seven days. As Service puts it, “Every time you put an FPV in, you get one back,” creating a buffer and reinforcing the game dynamic.
After Ukraine: 250,000 Trained Operators, No Plan
Service’s central concern is not only what happens in Ukraine, but what happens after. He estimates that roughly 250,000 “combatants” have acquired advanced drone warfare skills on the front lines, including FPV piloting, fiber‑optic operations, ISR workflows and points‑based targeting discipline.
When these volunteer fighters and specialists return home, many will re‑enter environments plagued by organized crime, cartels and extremist networks eager to monetize their skills. Service is already “100% aware” of veterans of the Ukrainian battlefield applying their learned methods in North Africa, Southeast Asia and South America on behalf of cartels and criminal syndicates.
In imploring the audience to “Please continue to pay them even after the war,” he invoked the Iraq precedent, where unpaid former security forces turned to paramilitary militias and inflicted more damage on allied troops than the formal Iraqi army did. Without sustained financial, social and political integration of Ukraine’s drone‑trained population, the world risks unleashing a diaspora of operators who view cities, ports, prisons and borders as just another league to win.
Cartels, Prisons And The New Black

Service’s projection is already visible in civilian environments. “What do we think is going to happen with organized crime? What do we think is going to happen with cartels?” he asked, as criminals learn to “take the atrocities of war and then apply it to criminal acts.”
Drones have become the delivery vehicle of choice for contraband. In Georgia alone, hundreds of drone incidents and arrests over a single year delivered drugs, cell phones, firearms and millions of dollars in illicit goods, often flown by people who may not perceive themselves as terrorists but are functionally executing complex, proxy‑based operations. The challenge, and his core message, is to ensure that this normalization does not rest on unaddressed lessons from Ukraine. That means building counter‑UAS architectures and legal authorities that can handle fiber‑optic, RF‑silent threats, investing in integrated geospatial intelligence (GEOINT) pipelines that move data fast enough to matter, and designing post‑conflict policies that keep 250,000 trained operators inside legitimate economies.
If the global security community fails to act on those lessons before the war ends, the weaponized skies over Europe will not stay there. They will follow Ukrainian veterans home, flow into cartel territories, surround critical infrastructure and hover above stadiums, turning every drone buzz potentially into a question no community is yet fully ready to answer.
